Jaguar Land Rover looks to bring Gran Turismo to your windshield

General Motors revealed its Performance Data Recorder (PDR) for the Chevrolet Corvette earlier this year that uses a front-mounted 720p camera to capture video of your endeavors on the track complete with overlaid telemetry data (gear selection, braking force, RPM, lap time, etc.). Using a 32GB SD card, the PDR is able to record 800 minutes of hotdoggin’ around the track.

Today, Jaguar Land Rover is taking things a step further by announcing the “Jaguar Virtual Windscreen” concept. For those of you familiar with console games like Gran Turismo or Forza, the Jaguar Virtual Windscreen projects pertinent vehicle information onto your entire windshield, giving you what amounts to a video game experience in the real world.

“By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once, said Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover. “Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the road, or the track.”


The Jaguar Virtual Windscreen, which is more than a few steps beyond the heads up displays (HUDs) available in many vehicles today, can display 3D tachometer, speedometer, and navigations across the entire windshield. And for racing aficionados, it provides real life “track hacks” such as racing line and braking guidance for when you hit the circuits.

For those that truly want the ultimate in video game transference, a ghost car mode is available which displays a “virtualized” rendition of your car from a previous lap on the windshield, which you can then try to outrace on subsequent laps. Or if you prefer, you can upload previous laps completed by other drivers to race against.

The system works by using cameras mounted in front of the drive to track head and eye movement. Using this information, software algorithms can then accurately project a “spec-free” 3D image on the windshield with the correct perspective based on the driver’s movements.

The Jaguar Virtual Windscreen is just a concept for now, but it hopes to deploy the technology in production vehicles within the next few years. It should also be noted that Ford is also using interior cameras to simplify the activation of secondary controls in vehicles.
