What do you think of when you imagine the cities of the future? Flying cars? High-tech facilities? What about skyscrapers that are so tall that they blow your mind? Those skyscrapers are already being built…and here are some of the tallest ones in the world.
Jeddah Tower, Saudi Arabia
Proposed in 2011, this architectural wonder will be sure to set new standards of height and design when it is finally completed in 2012. Being constructed in Jeddah’s Economic City and designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects, this tower will likely be the first to venture beyond the 1 kilometer mark for skyscraper heights. The 170-story building is expected to reach heights of more than 3280 feet (1000 meters). It will boast entertainment, residential and business spaces.
Merdeka PNB 118, Malaysia
Malaysia’s Merdeka PNB 118 is expected to be completed in 2024, with construction starting in 2014. Designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects, RSP Architects Sdn Bhd and G.A. Brand Design, this 118-story marvel is on its way to becoming Malaysia’s tallest tower as well as Asia’s third tallest. The building’s floors will be divided into offices, luxury hotels, a 7-storey shopping mall, a sky lobby and an observation deck.
Wuhan Greenland Center, China
The 636-meter tall tower will be China’s third-highest building and the fourth tallest in the world when it is completed at the end of 2018. It has 119 floors and covers an area of 300,000 square meters. Luxury apartments, condos, a 5-star hotel and a private club will be the highlights of this stunning piece of architecture. Its main design is composed of tapered, rounded corners and a domed top, giving it an aerodynamic quality.
