Which (internal) hard drive? Seagate or WD?

I am using two 500GB (internal; 3.5" SATA) hard drives manufactured by Western Digital for more than five years in a low-usage NAS. It is time to upgrade the hard drives, and I am looking at 2 TB or 3 TB hard drives.

My regular computer shop wala has told me that the WD hard drives are “short” in the market (along with some warranty issues), and he is promoting Seagate. What do forum members say about Seagate hard drives?

My experience with the WD hard drives has been very good. Does anyone know if there is something wrong with the WD sales and after-sales network?

Can forum members also recommend some good (physical) computer shops in Karachi for purchasing hard drives?

For drive reputation, look toward international performance and reliability reviews. In local markets especially with the usual shopkeepers, brand reputation goes up and down depending on how much margin they are getting on said brand and their issues with the distributors; real or perceived.

I have had a bad spate of Seagate HDD’s and have usually been served well by WD HDDs. Samsung is also ok but it depends on the series. If you can buy from abroad, go for HGST (an acquired subdivision of WD, IIRC) drives which are expensive but far better in reliability than others.

You might also like to peruse the results on Backblaze though their methods are disputed by some:

Thank you, Asad. The blackblaze data set is quite useful. Will check it in detail.

Yes, HGST is good. I have used a Hitachi HDD way back in the mid 1990s. Not sure if I can get it from abroad in the next four or five months. In any case, I would rather purchase the hard drives from local market to easily avail warranty (if needed).

I think that I will stick to WD. Now I just need to find a reliable shop in Karachi which is quite challenging!
