Read it before buying an EDGE enabled mobile

If you want an EDGE connection on your PC/ Laptop/ Notebook then you must choose the mobile which has at least EDGE Class 10 specification. So, better the class, better the speed. Ofcourse network and your area location are also important factors as far as internet speed is concerned. I am on ZoNG 2GB package, getting download speed above 27 KiloBytes/ sec using Samsung J150 (EDGE Class 10 mobile) here in Karachi at this time while writing this post. Any way, before buying any EDGE enabled mobile, read this carefully:

EDGE Class 6 : upto 177.6 kilobits/sec downlink AND 59.2 kilobits/sec uplink (or 3 DL/ 1UL)

EDGE Class 8 : upto 236.8 kilobits/sec downlink AND 59.2 kilobits/sec uplink (or 4 DL/ 1UL)

EDGE Class 9 : upto 177.6 kilobits/sec downlink AND 118.4 kilobits/sec uplink (or 3 DL/ 2UL)

EDGE Class 10 : upto 236.8 kilobits/sec downlink AND 118.4 kilobits/sec uplink (or 4 DL/ 2UL)

EDGE Class 11 : upto 236.8 kilobits/sec downlink AND 177.6 kilobits/sec uplink (or 4 DL/ 3UL)

EDGE Class 12 : upto 236.8 kilobits/sec downlink AND 236.8 kilobits/sec uplink (or 4 DL/ 4UL)

EDGE Class 32 : upto 296 kilobits/sec downlink AND 177.6 kilobits/sec uplink (or 5 DL/ 3UL)

While GPRS Class 10 means 53.6 kilobits/sec downlink, so you can see the difference b/w GPRS and EDGE enabled mobile.

NOTE1:

Only 5 slots (DL+UL) are active or useable simultaneously on class 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 mobiles while 6 slots (DL+UL) are active on class 32 mobile. Under EDGE, each timeslot supports upto 59.2 kilobits/sec data rate.

NOTE2:

59.2 kilobits/sec = 7.4 KiloBytes/sec

118.4 kilobits/sec = 14.8 KiloBytes/sec

177.6 kilobits/sec = 22.2 KiloBytes/sec

236.8 kilobits/sec = 29.6 KiloBytes/sec

296 kilobits/sec = 37 KiloBytes/sec

If your mobile has the potential, then you can get more than 36 KB/sec download speed on EDGE network.

Also note that EDGE class 8, 10, 11, 12 have same 236.8 kilobits/sec download speed. These only differs on upload speed! If upload speed also matters for you, then you must choose at least EDGE class 11 mobile.
