Ptcl is damn slow 50% losses on pinging default gateway

#1

Hi I have ptcl 1mb student connection. Now it's damn slow. Slower than 28k modem. On its status its showing that's its connected at 2mb speed for download and 509 for upload. (i have 1mb and it's falsely showing it as 2m. I gave never been able to achieve speeds above that of 1mb in the past).

I am also getting the default gateway
Is ip address is 182.176.0.x and primary dns if 184.82.223.18. But I am not able to browse net. I canot seem to open a y site. Tried on 3 different PCS and on android.

However sometimes half a page opens…

I tried pinging my default gateway… 182.176.0.x and I am getting 50% packet loss.

While pinging my local router default gateway I am able to get 0% packet loss.

What could be the issue…

I have tried reseting the modem and re entering the settings no luck.

your port is set to 2mb but you'll get speeds of 1mb only as per your package. This is normal for most connections I've seen and you should only get it adjusted to 1mb if you are facing continuous disruptions in your line (SNR)

Also you do know the difference between KB and Mb? best download speeds you can achieve will be 110 - 120 KB/s

Like for my 2mbps.... I get 270KB/s download

as for DNS

set it to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 ....there are plenty of guides available online on how to do that

It had been showing the port as 2mb but real speed is 107kB/s. Normally…

Now I couldn’t even open any site it just load the title of the site and would not load the page…

I have already set the dns in my pic to that of Google. But dns of my router I’d set to auto which gets ptcl dns address.

Use trace route (tracert) to any main website and post here.

Hello!

Yes, there is (random) slowdown on that particular gateway!

yes its being slow, im getting half the speeds of my allocated package

#7

Hello again!

I have just been informed that its due to regular scheduled maintenance and would be resolved as soon as its finished!

Ahmed Faraz

#8

"regular scheduled maintenance" is just going on for ages .

#9

Thanks Ahmed Faraz Now it's working fine. Earlier when the problem happened I wasn't even able to trace beyond my gateway address of ptcl. I tried Tracing to Google and Wikipedia and Cisco. Com Unfortunatly I haven't saved the results so that i could post them here. Also i am getting this issue quite frequently I think one every two weeks. And it resolves on itself within 24 hours.

I have noticed the same problem. Just untill a month ago or so I was getting higher speed than my allocated DSL package of 6MB. With burst downloads I was getting around 8-9Mbps and was surpsingly happy.

However guess starting last week or so I am getting half my package speed, that is getting just around 3Mbps. Tried checking and changing all points of failure in my home network including the distribution DB , then DSL splitter, then phone cable, then the CAT 5 connection cables between Modem and Router and between router and computer. Nothing changes the situation and improves the condition.

Never did try calling the call center help line. If someone did then i guess they would have gotten the same generic response.

I am in Karachi connected from Azizabad exchange, anyone else around here in Karachi going thru the same dilemma.?

Thanks.

Well

I think it's not related, but, I'll share line stats:

AM_Radio_Interference.png

Notice the interference in the AM radio band ... seems like some wire (or internal to router) is acting as an antenna ... note that this is after taking some 'quick' measures (moving router's power supply to filtered power socket and such) so the effect is somewhat reduced ... this interference gets worse during the night!

Another point to note is that dslam (chipset) is by Globespan and I recall it being Infineon sometime back though I don't know when the switchover took place!

Software used: DMT Tool v7 for SpeedTouch Routers

Router: SpeedTouch ST790 (BTHH v1.5) using Broadcom chipset

Ahmed Faraz

Im still faicing this issue, did they tell you when its going to be resolved?

#13

Hello Again!

I haven't faced any real issues since then and browsing seems to have returned to normal for me!

Regards,

Ahmed Faraz

#14

Browsing is pathetic and so are downloading speeds. Can someone update what the heck is going on? Its been a week now!

#15

Hello!

Default PTCL DNS servers have changed for me (I recommend Norton's/Metacert's DNS servers) ... if that's the case, then, be sure to flush your dns cache and try again!

Ahmed Faraz

some thing similar is happening at my end too. I suddenly get pings of 900ms to the default gateway. PTCL people have tried many times to remedy it but they couldn't. Now they are saying some "upgradation" is going on in Islamabad. Don't know whats the reason though.

#17

Again damn slow speed from past 2 days.. Cant open alot of forums even on Tapatalk

Something is up today - I live in Pindi, and the pings are not this bad (pings to the gateway are not this bad - they're literally ALL OVER THE PLACE!)

I wonder if they're really fixing things, or if they're breaking them so that they can tell people that we're fixing them...

Please help me when i am pinging on default gateway i am getting 900ms 1200ms then suddenly it reduces to 45 to 50 then again increase to 500ms and sometime request timeout.
