Phone line dead but DSL working

So how is this possible? My phone line has no dial tone but DSL is working. It is happening for the past 15 days ever since roads were dug to install new pipe lines. As a result most of phone lines in our area went dead. DSL stopped working. Then after few days DSL started working but phone line is still dead.....then again after a day or two DSL stopped working....then after 4, 5 days back DSL started working but phone line remains dead!

I haven't checked the phone set or line that goes out of splitter and goes into set but I don't think they are faulty. I will check them though but does any body know what could be the problem?

Happens all the time especially when it rains!

It proves that DSL is better than telephone in communications. :D j/k

Phone voice communication uses a lower frequency then the DSL does...

"DSL modems use frequencies from 25 kHz to above 1MHz (see Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), in order not to interfere with voice service which is primarily 0-4 kHz. Voiceband modems use the same frequency spectrum as ordinary telephones, and will interfere with voice service - it is usually impossible to make a telephone call on a line which is being used by a voiceband modem."

x2.

this is possible Techman , some time your voice signal from exchange can be down or dead / but yor DSL will keep working so nothing to worry about complaint to ISP for this issue that your voice signal is down , but DSL working :)

You should be happy Ptcl at least provides a one service which works nearly 24/7. But there are many blah blah blah's on ptcl's dsl.

yeah its very strange but i knw it is possible due too inconsistecy . i have also face this but later on it is solved.

DSL can work on a single wire too, while phone needs a pair of wires

maybe one of the wire got damaged.....

Yeah the whole area's phone lines are not working. Even our second phone line is dead now thanks to digging of roads.

But it effects speed yar
