Multiple Hardware Advice

AoA

Cutting it short, i need a powerful PC...core i7, 800+ SPs GPU etc....now i need to decide between a desktop and a laptop since portability is important....I had ASUS G73 (or G74 wich is abt to be released) in mind....however, recently ive been thinking that it would be better to get a Desktop + laptop combo (i had the new HP probooks in mind)...it would be both cheaper and more powerful so ur comments on this would be appreciated...

As far as the desktop is concerned, i have the following questions:

1) i5 2500 v i7 2600: i mean, r the four extra threads worth the 6k difference

2) K version or non K version?

3) assuming i do get the K version, will i need P67 to make benefit of it or wud the cheaper H67 work? (referring to overclocking)

4) 4 v 8 GB RAM?

5) suggestions on PSU and casing (i had the Antec 600 in mind for the casing ~ 6k on galaxy looks gud).

6) am opting for XFX 6950 1GB...atm its listed as cheaper than 6870 on galaxy, and it beats the more expensive GTX 560 Ti in most benches. comments?

7) LCD or LED? any suggestions there? requirement is 1080p (or 1200 p if possible,)<=2ms response time, and range around 20k

Thanks in advance for help!

as far as desktop is concerned:

--there are many casing available in the market, depends on what you like. side window or more fans etc

and try to buy at least a 650 watts ps for your rig

check these websites:

http://www.galaxy.com.pk

http://www.astron.com.pk/

http://www.iamextreme.net/

--if you have the budget then i7 2600 is best

--k version of processor recommended if you are a overclocker

--8 gb ram is best (the more the better, again will depend on your budget and what u r using it for)

--6950 seems good enough as well

--led is the way to go, better contrast ratio and newer tech. for leds take a look here

You seriously need to decide first, desktop or laptop? Do you need to game or run extremely heavy 3d apps? If not, go for a laptop for the portability you desire. And also the low power consumption.

Once you have decided, we all can offer better suggestions.

Looks like you need a very powerful machine. In that case a desktop will more suitable. Because if you are going to buy a laptop with very high end specs then its going to be:

* heavy

* generate a lot heat

* not have a great battery life

1. I would recommend i5 2500 as its the cheaper solution. Even now a days, a core 2 quad is enough for gaming so i7 2600 won’t be of any real use unless the main purpose of the rig is not gaming.

2. K version if you are going to overclock & non-K if you won’t be overclocking.

3. P67 chipset supports overclocking while H67 DOESN’T. I would recommend getting MSI P67A C-43 from Astrontech. It would cost you about RS. 10,200

4. 8 GB Ram. Get G.SKILL RIPJAWSX from Iamextreme RS. 10,000. Its better & cheaper than Corsair Vengeance.

5a. You have a couple of choices for PSU:

*Xigmatek NRP-MC 702 from Iamextreme for Rs. 10,000

*Thermaltake TPX-775MPCEU from Galaxy for Rs. 12,800

*Corsair TX850 from Galaxy for Rs. 12,000

All 3 of them are great PSU’s, check reviews online. Please note that the first 2 are modular while the corsair one is non-modular. Xigmatek one is best bang for buck.

5b. Antec 600 is cheaper on Iamextreme though I would suggest Xigmatek Elysium over Antec 600. Elysium casing is just pure awesomeness & another plus point is that it costs 4k less than Intl. market. Its currently the best casing that you can find here.

6. 6950 1GB & GTX 560Ti are negligible in performance now (new drivers). It totally depends on you, which brand you prefer. But you get these extras with a Nvidia GPU i.e. Cuda & Physx. 6950 costs ~22k while 560Ti costs ~24k

7. 2ms response time is just a marketing gimmick. Get the ASUS LCD MS246H 24" from Galaxy. Pretty unique design.

Thanx all for the replies... a few of the finer points....

1. While I do agree that the ASUS LCD is really pretty...what about the Samsung S22A300B or S23A300B...both r 1080p with 5 ms response time and r LED...also cheaper than the ASUS one...why should I prefer the ASUS lcd over them? Also, i remember reading that TN panels are old and IPS is the new technology....and i read at anandtech that the this ASUS LCD is a TN panel?

2. please suggest an ASUS alternative to the MSI motherboard...

3. Xigmatek Elysium is for like 14000....too expensive id like to keep the casing cost to a minimum

4. also the PSU is a bit above my budget...how do u reccomend antec Earth watts 750

5. personally i am somewhat biased towards Ati/AMD...is Physx that much a compelling reason to ditch 6950?

Thanx!

also...please provide a link for comparison between Gskill and corsair...because fo rthe most part corsair appears to be a more reliable vendor 9at least more widespread) than gskill

1. Don't know much about LCD/LED's so its your personal preference.

2. Last I checked,Asus B3 P67 boards still haven't arrived & shingtech (official asus distri.) weren't too happy giving B3 replacements for free where as Astrontech were being honest & replacing the motherboards for free.

3. Than check Iamextreme.net or galaxy.pk & buy any you like.

4. Hmm Antec EA750W isn't too bad.

5. Regarding corsair & G.SKILL. Mate those are the 2 biggest memory manufacturers in the world. Yes, corsair is known here but that ripjawsx is better + you will get lifetime warranty with G.SKILL. Last when I bought my Corsair Dominators from galaxy, they gave me 10months warranty on it not lifetime lol

So ive been looking over the bechmarks for 6950 1gb v 560 Ti...and while most sites prefer 560 Ti i thnk the lower price of 6950 in pakistan + higher performance in tough titles gives it a win....

on a side note...have any of u guys spotted custom cooled or overclocked 6950s 1gb or 560 Ti s in pakistan?

Also a couple of more questions:

1) I have no idea how to decide the PSU....requirement is to run core i5 2500K + 6950/560 Ti (both require 2 PCIe 6 pin connectors) + 8 GB ram + 5 HDDS.... u guys plz give suggestions total budget for PSU+casing is 15-16k?

2)independently of the above, which among these would u suggest:

1. CoolerMaster GX-750W ~8000 on galaxy http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6643

2. Antec Earth Watts 750W ~8200 on iamxtreme http://store.antec.com/Product/power_supply-earthwatts/ea-750/0-761345-27750-1.aspx

3. Thermaltake TR-700P 700W ~9300 on galaxy http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1172&ID=1939

thanx!
