Is this virus or a bug in winnxp?

i am using winxp pro and I opened a memory card and norton 2008( updated) detect a virus and stopped but now I am facing problem that whenever i change SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS option then after few seconds it automatically sets back to DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS OPTION..

I check the "Show Hidden files and Folders" checkbox, close the dialog and open the dialog again. I see that check box is already unchecked by now.

i tried this also but didnt work

1. Go to Start>Run.

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.

3. Find the value "Hidden" on the right side, Right click it and modify it to 1.

AS soon as i change the value in hidden registry it automatically resets to 2

what to do ...

^ You have a virus/spy/rootkit/backdoor in your computer. Try to update your Norton 2008 to latest virus definition (which I highly doubt possible after a good virus/spy) and do a full scan of all of your computer's drives.

If problem persist then try using another anti-virus (fully updated) and do a full scan of all of your computer's drives.

If problem still there, then format and reinstall Windows.

By the way, after years of experience, I don't even bother for scanning for viruses. I simply format and reinstall Windows and within 2 hours (1 hour for Windows and an hour for installing softwares) I get my clean Windows back that is ready to use. Because scanning for viruses will take a lot of time with very little success chance.

Which antivirus apart from norton should i try

It's your own choice.

- AVG 8 (Free edition).

http://free.avg.com/

- AVG 8 (Commercial edition)

http://www.avg.com/

- NOD32 (ESET NOD32 or ESET Internet Security, both are commercial).

http://www.eset.com/

(ESET Internet Security is NOD32 with firewall)

- ESET Online Scan (Free, I guess).

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

- Kaspersky Anti-Virus (Commercial)

http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky_anti-virus

=======

ESET NOD32 is the fastest scanner (parts written in assembly).

It might take like 2 to 10 days to full scan an average 40 GB harddisk. ESET NOD32 may take from 4 hours to 2 days to full scan an average 40 GB harddisk.

Don't waste your time in scanning. Do it to satisfy your heart. But believe me that format+reinstalling Windows is fastest method. And it also make sure that no virus/spy is still hidden.

By the way, I use AVG 8. It's kind of half-successful. Sometime, it does catch virus, sometime it don't.

It's a common thing in XP, that I always face

it is called pen-drive error

Try an anti-virus but I wasn't able to fix it up with nod32

no its not common thing , i googled it I found this

http://www.msfn.org/board/View-Files-Folders-option-t115236.html

1. Go to Start>Run.

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.

3. Find the value "Hidden" on the right side, Right click it and modify it to 1.

that modified value also reset to 2 as soon as i close regedit and open again…

Create another user on windows xp. Check to see if the problem occurs from that account or not. If it doesn't then the antivirus has definitly removed the virus but the virus has corrupted the registry of your account. In this case you can take the easy path and start using that account instead of your current one.

wait .. now listen to me

when a virus enters in ur pc it changes the registery so that the hiden files are not viewable

even when the virus is removed the registery settings are not reversed so u have to use some tool to do it

google "enable hidden files" and you will find good softwares for this purpose

but remember to first install nod32

update it to latest

scan pc

then do all above things ...

Pfft... use a registry hack to correct this issue. Save the following lines as a text file with .reg extension and execute the file:
