google recently allowed Pakistan's map to be editable by users just like wiki, kindly help them edit the map of the area/locality you live in

Sounds like an excellent idea. I always found a proper map resource lacking for Pakistani cities. Hopefully this'll resolve that issue!

#3

there is also wikipmapia

which is basically a wiki on top of google maps

i have used it some times for places in pakistan

http://wikimapia.org/

#4

have been using wikimapia.org and openstreetmap.org on pc and mobile but am excited that google chooses pakistan to be editable in google maps, only limited number of countries(18) are currently editable

Google's press release:

you must be logged on to google account

#5

as obviously google won't be having moderators from your area, so you youself have been entrusted with moderating the changes being made by others, for example some one adds a hospital or school name and you approve it and few other users also approve it then it'll get published and go live on google maps

#6

Yeah, so be responsible. I LOL'd at Dunkin Donalds (university road), though!

#7

"nani ka ghar" "Salman ka flat" things like that should be disapproved and avoided

Wikimapia is nowhere near as good as the Google Map Maker concept. With Wikimapia at best you mark out general areas. Google Map Maker lets you name each street, and I've already since a fair bit of addition to it in two days! I hope all the experts in Karachi's geography would take the time to contribute to this project.

definitely google's mighty product can't be compared much but before mapmaker, wikimapia and openstreetmap were the best options available.

Quite alot of data have been added since last few days, but am concerned about one major issue, Indians have asked google to remove high resolution images of mumbai/dehli etc whereas here we are marking each and every inch of our major cities.. call me paranoid or whatever but even the google's moderators overseeing things are Indians, won't this be harmful to us in any way..

#13

^ Could street names and shop locations do any harm?

They get better imagery with information from USIsreal Spy Satellites and perhaps their own so they don’t really need Google Maps/Earth for it.

Yeah it’s possible that these images/info may be used by the current factions fighting up with the Government and who are blowing themselves up killing innocent people, to some extent coordinate an attack through info up there. But then again its possible for them to do it without all this.

#15

their advanced satellites can zoom in and snap high resolution images but other info/data like which building is what(school/hospital/mosque) is missing,so we might be filling the blanks for them

#16

They may actually zoom up to see the people coming out of it and figure that out. Perhaps even look at the board set on that building :P.

hmm yea they can do that… they say they can read number plate of a moving vehicle so reading a large board won’t be a problem… maybe their agents on ground(there must be plenty of them) can also guide them…

I was just looking at the Google map for Pakistan and there has been significant progress in the last two months. I'm really impressed! Can't vouch for the accuracy of it though. Recommend everyone check it out once again!

Wow, that looks nice! People need a better sense of the prominence indicator though…

Seems to be pretty accurate though as far as I can tell. :D
