Facebook, Wikipedia, Google, Flickr & YouTube Banned At PTA's Request

#1

Right now the news tickers are indicating that the Lahore

High Court has acquiesced to PTA's plea to ban Facebook

in Pakistan till 31st May, 2010. I tried logging-in and the

site does not open on Maxcom, as of now.

According to news reports, this whole thing has come

about because of a belligerent anti-Islamic bent of this

website over a period of time. It takes down "pro-Islamic"

pages, while it drags it's feet on anti-Islamic pages (like

the one right now that is inviting members to send in

caricatures of Prophet Mohammad P.B.U.H), that also

violate it's own Terms Of Service.

Personally, I think this ban will be short-lived. A few days

maybe, or a couple of months at the most. It will most

hurt those whose social lives had become entertwined

with this website. But still, this is a bhonda radd-e-amal

on the part of PTA (once again), who should have just

banned those specific pages, instead of taking an axe

to the whole thing, like some cave-dwelling Neanderthal.

PS: Proxies are working fine on Facebook. So those

who know how, don't have to fret at all.

^ Only the specific page has been blocked. Rest of FB is accessible.

facebook making too much problem for me since yesterday some time loading and some time it wont load takes ages to do any thing

#4

Yes, it's opening now. Maybe they were just tinkering around

earlier.

So I guess it's not a big deal then ?. I still don't believe in banning

stuff on the net, but maybe the govt believes that it needs a fig

leaf. Even so, we should make our displeasure known on Facebook

through amassing and projecting a united front against such

prejudice and hateful attitudes. According to reports there are

45 million Facebook users in Pakistan. Are they concerned ?.
