Earth on Telephone Line?

What is meant by earth on the telephone line?

I have been suggested/told by my friend, that you have earth on your line.

Does this affect DSL performance? How can I get it removed?

(I expect an answer saying Lineman)

PS: does this mean that my insulated copper wire is touching a surface somewhere?? being grounded??

It can. It's when you hear a static in your telephone line.

Ask your lineman to clear up the earth. It's mostly due to faulty wiring somewhere.

It means that some electricity wire is being 'earthed' to the phone line wire.

Basically in short ... if you touch both wires with your hands ... you get a lil shock :P Had it on my old place, didnt mess with it much ... PTCL 512 was 50-52kbps all the time from RS.com. So it shouldnt be that big of a problem for DSL!

That’s what one of my friend told me that it doesn’t messes up DSL.

I think I should go forward with the installation of DSL, and then later on contact a line man if it becomes a big issue.
