Difference Between GPRS and Edge

#1

Hi i have this info dat edge z faster than gprs i want to ask dat e.g i activated gprs and in my area edge is also availabel so i l get edge or gprs or for edge separate activation is done thx

#2

No activation is required but for EDGE you must have a EDGE set like Nokia 5320 etc. Then you can get high speed of EDGE else you would get simple GPRS speed

#3

thx for ur post i ve nokia 5320 and i have activated gprs on it now how can i know dat whether i m getting edge or gprs

#4

^your mobile will show an E sign for EDGE and G for GPRS at the top of the screen

I am using Nokia N93 on Telenor, when I connect to AP telenor and use the net, everything works fine but I don't see G or E on top of the screen, how can I confirm if I am on Edge or not ?

N93 or symbian os based phones symbols for gprs or edge

gprs-active.gif for gprs

egprs-active.gif for edge

java os based nokia phones

Nokia_5300_registered_GPRS_EGPRS.gif G for gprs . E for edge

edit: these symbols are for ACTIVE gprs or ACTIVE edge (there are other symbols for all states of gprs and edge) see http://nokiae50.info/articles/icons-nokia

I have Samsung G600 and I always see G on top of the screen I have Mobilink Unlimited Gprs package.

#8

^need not to worry. its unlimited. and btw that kind of G only says 'I m available. you can use me'

if u dont like this G. then go to your connection settings. there must be an option to set it.

like in most of the Nokia Symbian phones it's in

[settings>Connections>Packet Data>Packet data connection]

if it is set to 'When Available' then you will always see that G on your screen

if it is set to 'When Needed' then no G no E will be shown on your screen un less you connect it.

(above demo is just talking about G becase G600 show G. in real, symbian phones do not show G but some thing else)

Thanks, that helps… but the icon I get is for GPRS though Telenor has EDGE all over Karachi at the least, no ?

#10

^I cant guess about any specific location.

I use mobilink postpaid. here in my office (Gulberg III), sitting on my computer, I usually get both icons alterntively.

GSM/GPRS/EDGE signals vary time to time and place to place. moving from one room to another room can also demonstrate it because your location id varies.

also even if Telenor says that EDGE is all over Karachi, that doesn't gaurentee, at every location of Karachi you will get EDGE fully.

edit: when your phone says its GPRS then it would most probably be the GPRS not EDGE
