Computer imports down

ISLAMABAD (April 12 2008): Due to levy of sales tax on computers and related accessories in the 2006-07 budget the sales of personal computers registered a decline of 9.6 percent in 2007 as compared to 16.4 percent in 2006.

Sources in the computer industry told Business Recorder on Friday that such slowdown was a matter of concern not only for the computer industry but also for overall growth of the country because information technology is the backbone of all formal and informal sectors of the economy.

During 2006-07, total import of PCs and servers in the country was 630,000 units, which dropped to 149,000 units at the end of 2007, thus registering a decline of 40 percent.

The neighbouring countries have granted a host of tariff and non-tariff concessions to the computer industry as compared to Pakistan, which should be a point of serious concern for the legislators in framing tax policies, particularly to this industry, as the computer density plays an important role in the economic development of the country.

Sources said that it has become the need of the hour to have real-time growth of the economy, and 15 percent GST on computers and related accessories should be abolished in the next budget.

i just noticed that the price of the intel E8400 3.0Ghz dual core processor has gone up from 14000 to 17000 on the galaxy website, is it related?

that’s just plain #$%#

That's for the whole fiscal year and is not directly related to the price surges, at galaxy, whatsoever. There can be few reasons for the increase in price of that particular processor: forces of demand and supply in play; inflation with general level of prices rising all over; or simply unjust practices by galaxy taking advantage of the current economic situation and fooling the customers into blaming it on inflation.

Galaxy overcharges. Look in local shops.

Take prices from Galaxy to the local stores and bargain them down. Works for me all the time.
